A Little About My Research

I think that I have one of the best jobs on the planet. On a regular basis, I get to work with great patients and provide them the opportunity to get back to living their lives without hip or knee joint pain. Some days this means that I am in the operating room, where I use top-of-the-line techniques to changes lives. Each patient has a special situation, and I keep this in mind when I work to replace or repair their damaged joints. These patients aren’t just getting a joint replacement; they are also getting a chance to reclaim their lives.
But the world of knee and hip replacements goes beyond the operating table. If you have been doing research on joint surgeries, you have no doubt encountered articles about how technology is changing the way procedures take place in New York and around the world. For years, I have devoted myself to the research and study of the human body and the best ways to restore damaged and worn-out joints. This has included time as a senior consultant on various boards, including the Board of Governors of the Arthritis Foundation (NE) and the Scientific Advisory Board of OrthoSensor.
Most recently, my research has centered on how robotics and computers can improve the way surgeons operate on joint replacement candidates. Some of the technology that I review and implement includes sensors and accelerometers that are used during procedures to provide immediate biomechanical feedback. These smart implants are continually evolving, and I look forward to exploring how they can continue to improve data and implant design.
Additionally, I focus a lot on computer-assisted navigation and minimally invasive procedures. Imagine being able to map out your joints before surgery using trackers that move with your body, provide live data about its working (and non-working) mechanics, and note any loose ligaments. Thanks to new technologies that I actively study, this is possible, and it can greatly improve soft tissue balancing during surgery. Likewise, minimally invasive surgeries have changed the way we think about procedures. Gone are the days of deep cuts to access injured or damaged joints. Today, with the assistance of cameras and equipment, we can approach a joint and repair or replace it with only a small incision that heals faster, leaves less scarring, and is just as effective as more traditional techniques.
My studies have been published in numerous scientific publications and have impacted the work of others in my field. Additionally, I have served as an editor or author of book chapters and video exhibits.
